The children explore wind and water using observations, experiments and
books to learn more about such topics as evaporation, weather, temperature,
insulation, rain and snow, During some of our activities, the children learn that we can fiund water in different forms, such as rain (liquid), snow and ice (solid) and as steam (gas). We explore the concept of waterproof and absorbent, as well. Ask your children if they can tell you some waterproof material or something that is absorbent. We also discover that plants and animals need water to live. |

Jonathan and Theo try to blow air into the balloons to stretch the balloons. Jonathan says "Some air is falling out of my mouth on the side, so I have to try to hold it in." Seamus begins to blow air into his balloon, and Michelle has found a way to blow the air in and stretch the balloon quickly! Wow! Sarah thinks that "putting air into balloons is so easy!" Osawese notices, "When I look through my balloon everything looks pink!" Mrs. Shields hands her a pink balloon that is not inflated. "Does everything look pink when you look through this one?" she asks. Osawese finds that she can't see anything through the deflated balloon. "Maybe 'cause this one is bigger and the air makes it light pink," she thinks. Holding the balloons straight out when we are outside on a windy day produces different results! There they go again! Summer and Theo try to move some boats, and Summer discovers that if there is TOO much wind, it can knock a sailboat over. Sienna designs this boat which tips over in the water. She decides that the straws are too long, and cuts them to make them shorter. Such a smart thinker! Nolan uses a straw to blow air on the boat that he makes. He decides that he needs to move the straw closer to the boat to make it move more. Iyanna hangs an apron on the clothesline in Dramatic Play. Caroline tries to hold her balloon straight out as we did inside, but the wind blows her balloon behind her! Mia looks on as Vasilia and Summer hang onto their balloons and each other! Theo uses some materials from our Beautiful Junk area to make a sailboat. He blows through a straw to move it across the water. Theo experiments with a piece of paper and sees that the fan can blow paper, too. Sarah and Summer watch the movement of water through a water wheel at the Sensory Table. Mia paints at the easel inspired by the images from the book Gilberto and the Wind. |
Caroline watches as Sienna tries teh "no hands" approach to blowing air into balloons! Vasilia sees that moving air inside a balloon makes the balloon stretch. Shawn'ae and Janeudy work on blowing up their balloons. Shawn'aw says "when you let go of the balloon all the air comes out!" After we blow up the balloons, we do an experiment holding the balloons straight out in the hallway where there is no breeze. The children decide that the air ios not moving in the hallway, so the balloons just hang straight down. The children try to keep the balloons straight in front of them, but see that they move in the direction the wind is blowing. Shawn'ae and Sarah blow air through straws to move their boats through the water. After exploring with some plastic boats, some materials were put out for the children to make their own boats with. Caroline is cutting some plastic to make a sail. Adam makes his boat with some plastic for the sail and a round plastic cup. Vasilia discovers that if she gets close enough to her boat, she doesn't need a straw. If she blows really hard, she can move her boat without the straw. After filling the balloons and experimenting with them in our OWL groups, we took them outside to enjoy as a whole class. Sean is holding his balloon tightly as there is wind that could blow it away! Mia and Michelle enjoy being outside with the balloons to see their movement in the breeze. Nolan and Ethan realize that the wind has blown their balloons around and wrapped the strings together! Caroline and Iyanna notice that the wind from the fan can blow the flag! Vasilia's prediction that a plastic bag can be moved by the wind from a fan proves to be true! Janeudy and Michelle explore the snow at the Sensory table. Sarah and Nolan explore how the wind can dry wet clothes put on a clothesline. Janeudy, Iyanna and Shawn'ae watch the wind from the wind blow onto the apron hung on the clothesline. |
