The month of November is Native American Awareness month.  We were so fortunate to have Sienna's mom, Geraldine Barney, come in to share her Navajo culture with us!   Geri shared family textiles and memories and read us a book.  The children loved to have her also sing Navajo songs.  We have also been playing Navajo music in our classroom all month, and have read some books about the Navajo people.

Geri displays some of her beautiful blankets that have been in her family for many years.  Shawn'ae is wrapped in another blanket that Geri has shared with the children.

The children share Geri's blanket as they listen to the story that she reads.

The children join in to the rhythm of the Navajo music!

Caroline and Cassie look at the many patterns in the prints made by Geri.

Ethan holds the slides up to the light to see the photos Geri brought to share.

Geri reads The Navajo ABCs. The children love the cradle board.  Adam says that the cradle boards are small because the babies are small that go in them.

Geri demonstrates a Navajo drum.  Adam likes the design on it, and says it reminds him of a shield.

Seamus is intrigued by the Navajo magazine!

Theo is very careful as he handles the prints of Geri's parents and grandparents.

Nolan is intently listening to Geri's music!
