In our OWL Literacy Unit 2, we will be talking about friendship, how to be a good friend, and ways to resolve conflicts with friends. Through Story Time books, children will hear about the importance of being who you are, helping friends, enjoying special times together, and getting along. In addition to listening to stories, children will learn to identify rhyming words and beginning letters and sounds in words, as they build vocabulary and comprehension skills. They will also participate in a variety of music, poetry, math, science, and art activities. |

After reading The Little Red Hen Makes A Pizza, the children explored pizza dough in OWL groups. Theo and Caroline are rolling the dough! Janeudy and Shawn'ae work with dough on their plates. Shawn'ae says, "The dough is so sticky!" Max remembers that we can add flour to the dough if it is too sticky. He adds a little flour before he rolls the dough. Sarah and Iyanna bake some pizzas in the oven in Dramatic Play. Iyanna is careful to use oven mitts because the oven is hot! Seamus is pleased with the dough that he rolled! Great job, Seamus! After reading Little Red Hen Bakes a Pizza and Curious George Makes a Pizza, the class decides that we can open a pizza shop in Room 107. The class talks about what we will need to open a pizza shop, and we begin to make plans. Seamus makes a sign that we will need at the shop "so that the customers will know we are open." Janeudy and Shawn'ae are busy filling orders, while Sarah and Iyanna work at the register. Jayden places an order with Shawn'ae and tells her what toppings he wants on his pizza. It takes a lot of friends to run a pizza shop, and Cassie, Theo, Adam and Shawn'ae help out with washing the dishes and the pans from the pizza shop! Nolan is the server and writes down the order from Seamus, Ms. Alison and Michelle. Adam wrote an order for a pizza for Jayden and Mia. After reading stories, sometimes Mrs. Shields poses questions that we think about, then pair with a friend and share our opinions. After we Think-pair-share, some pairs are called on to share what their friends thought with the whole group. After reading Matthew and Tilly, Jonathan and Sienna share their thoughts about different ways Matthew and Tilly could have solved their problem of the broken crayon. Seamus and Shawn'ae build a structure with the Magna Tiles. Seamus lifts it over his head, and says, "It's the Stanley Cup, Mrs. Shields!" After sharing, Jonathan takes his turn calling on friends to hear their questions and comments Nolan likes the High tower diving board. He made it high, "so that people can be brave and go up really high to jump off!" Ethan builds a castle in the Block Area, and says, "Look, Mrs. Shields, I have a hammer to use when I build this!" Mrs. Shields added two bears to the Book Corner. These are our "Read To Me" Bears. They love to be read to, and the children have been very kind about reading books to the bears in the Book Corner. Here, Cassie and Summer read them a story. Kat and Jonathan take time to read to their friends, the "Read to Me" Bears in the Book Corner. Iyanna decides after reading to the "Read To Me" Bears that she wants to read a story to Mrs. Shields! Ms. Iyanna asks if Mrs. Shields has any questions or comments after reading! Ms. Iyanna is such a good teacher! Theo takes his turn as the cook at the pizza shop, and prepares an order to put in the box. After closing Mozzarella's, our pizza shop, we decided that we would open a grocery store like the one that the Little Red Hen went to when buying her ingredients for pizza. We talk about a grocery store and how things are organized into the same types of things in the aisles. We wonder baout how people know where things are located, and find out that the aisles have signs. We make some signs for our store and Caroline begins setting up a sign for the beverage section of our store. After the signs are on the shelves, Cassie and Carolien begin stocking the shelves with items that belong in each section of our store. Cassie is stocking tea in the beverage section. The Grocery Store Grand Opening! Seamus works the first shift as the Cashier and rings up the items that Theo has chosen. Ethan takes a turn working the register while Sienna bags the items for the customer. Theo picks up a few items on his shopping list! Shawn'ae looks like she is shopping for a party! Calum and Max sort the small seeds from the flower petals. Max says, "It's hard to pull them apart. The seeds are small!" |
Jonathan rolls his dough into a long skinny shape! Max kneads the dough while Sienna shapes her dough into a circle shape for a pizza. Mia helps Ethan add the mozzarella cheese to the pizza that he painted with sauce! Michelle watches as Seamus rolls his dough into a circle for a pizza! Nolan and Michelle work intently on their dough. The room 107 chefs are very serious about their work! Nolan and Michelle are practicing rolling and kneading the dough. Adam, Jayden and Sienna add toppings and cut the pizza in Dramatic Play. We think of several names for our pizza shop, and then vote on them. The name of "Mozzarella's" gets the most votes! We open for business and Sarah works the cash register while Osawese pays for a pizza that she ordered. Mia orders a pizza and Iyanna counts the money that Mia pays her. Ethan completes an order by shaking some seasonings on the pizza. Max takes a phone order for a pizza! Theo is busy behind him placing a pizza in a box for delivery! Kat cuts a pizza into slices after taking it out of the oven. Theo and Jonathan work with Magna tiles. Jonathan is building a castle and Theo is making a rocket ship. Theo shares his thoughts with his partner Vasilia. Calum and Nolan play Shape Bingo at math choice time. Cassie shares at Morning Share time. After she shares information that she wants to tell the class, she asks for questions and comments. The children are excited to share a comment or ask a question. Nolan and Calum work on building a home with a swimming pool in the Block Area. Vasilia makes a home with Magna TIles. She puts the family inside the structure. Theo and Summer use the Theraputty, and try to find the dime hidden inside. The putty offers a good deal of resistance and helps to build fine motor control, which will assist in handwriting. Theo reads If You Give a Cat a Cupcake to the "Read to Me" Bear. Iyanna gets comfy and reads to both "Read To Me" Bears! Adams read A Letter to Amy by Ezra Jack Keats to the "Read to Me" Bears. It's one of our favorites, and Adam thinks the bears like it too! Mia is happy to get her order from the cook at "Mozzarella's", the Room 107 pizza shop! Max helps to set up the shelves in the store. He finds a spot that he thinks would be great for fruits and vegetables. The children have met in small groups to talk about the different sections in a grocery store and make the signs for the sections that we will have in our store. They also looked in grocery store sales flyers to find pictures of the items that would be found in each section of the store. They then cut them out and attached them to the sign for that section. Such smart thinkers! Shopkeepers Max, Caroline and Cassie are taking a break after setting up the shelves of the store! Ethan shops at the Grocery store and then checks out at the register to pay for his items. Calum checks the shelves to see what items need to be restocked in the store. Nolan checks a price on an item with Cassie before he rings it up! Some of the chrysanthemums in our classroom window boxes died and Jayden explored one of the flowers to find the seeds. Max and Calum take a close look with the magnifying glasses. They are surprised the seeds are so small! |
