We love to go outdoors and notice nature all around us!  Every Friday, the children all take a clipboard, pencil and paper and record our explorations of nature.  Lately, we have been noticing the signs of the season change from the end of summer to early autumn.  We have been looking to notice what is blooming in front of the Beethoven and what is changing from week to week.

Summer is noticing the sedum plant in front of the Beethoven.  She likes the color and notices that "this flower doesn't feel soft. It's a little hard"

Vasilia looks closely to see the colors of the flower and the leaves.  She thinks that the leaves feel soft.

Calum and Adam are exploring the shrubs. Calum says,"There are berries on here!"  Adam feels them and asks, "Can we eat these?" Vasilia and Mia come to look at the berries, too.  Jonathan says, "You can't eat them!"  Ethan agrees that we can't eat the berries that we find on the bushes because, "they might make you sick!"

Max, Jonathan and Kat observe a plant together.  Jonathan says, "This is fuzzy!"  Max agrees, "It IS fuzzy and it feels a little bit soft."  Kat feels the plant and thinks that it feels "a little tickly"

Shawn'ae and Michelle look at the yellow flowers and they point out the buds that haven't bloomed yet.  We talked about our own mum plants in our classroom that has some unopened buds. The children check our window box plants in the morning at morning choice time to see what has changed each day.

Adam wants to know what the sign says because "I'm drawing that too, because I observed that too." He is drawing every detail that he notices on his observational drawing!

Calum uses a magnifying glass to get a close look at the plants that are just beginning to sprout in the dirt.  Ethan and Mia are also waiting their turn to use the magnifying glass to take a look.  After they take a look they can compare their findings.  Great cooperative learning!

Janeudy shows Shawn'ae the plant that he is going to draw.  "It's yellow and white-2 colors!" he tells her.  Vasilia is already sketching the same plant.

Iyanna, Mia, Sarah and Shawn'ae look at the plants together.  Iyanna says, "These flowers are the same as ours! They are yellow, too." Iyanna remembers that we have a window box of yellow mums in our classroom just like the ones planted in the front of school.

Some of the beautiful plants that we were exploring outside.  Ask you child if they can tell you the colors of the plants.  Do they notice any patterns?

Sarah uses a magnifying glass to get a better view of the plant.

Sienna and Jonathan observe some plants and Sienna calls Mrs. Shields to tell her that "this plant looked purple and white but there's a little yellow in the middle, too!"

Mia found some flowers tucked under the "fuzzy plant". She said, "Look, I found some baby flowers!"

Ethan gets a closer look at the flowers and says, "Mrs. Shields, these are like the flowers in our room!"  He notices that this plant is bigger than the ones in our window box. Great observation, Ethan!
